Your daughter has been training for months. She has learned her routines to get ready for her first meet. For many parents, there is a real mystery to gymnastics when you first go to a meet. Where do the gymnasts start? Where do they go next? How do I make sure I don't miss her on her event?
Here are a few basics for parents new to gymnastics that can help you as your daughter begins with a gymnastics team.
1. At gymnastics meets, the gymnasts always rotate in Olympic order. Olympic order is Vault, Bars, Beam and Floor. So if your daughter starts at Beam, she will go to floor, then vault and last bars.
2. There are two types of warm up and competition that are generally used for compulsory gymnasts: the traditional format and the modified traditional. In the traditional warm up, the gymnasts will rotate, warming up on all four events. They will then compete on each event. In the modified traditional, they will warm up on an event, then compete on that event.
3. While we are talking about compulsory, here is a little brief on the Levels. The higher the level, the higher the skill requirements. Levels 1-5 are compulsory levels, which means that all gymnasts at that level will be performing the same routines in competition. Levels 6-10 are optional levels, where there are basic skill requirements, but the gymnast (and their coach) develop a routine to best suit the gymnast's strengths.
4. What is a fun meet? A fun meet is where gymnasts newer to gymnastics or competition can perform without the stress or disappointment of having to place and getting scores. While the gymnasts are scored, they receive a ribbon for the range of score they receive. Generally, the gymnast will receive a blue, red, white and yellow or rainbow ribbon. The fun meets are generally for gymnasts Levels 1-4.
